Curriculum
Our Curriculum at FUS
We are proud of the broad and enriching curriculum offered at FUS. Our curriculum sits at the heart of the school’s ethos and supports students to become successful, confident and independent young adults with a genuine passion for lifelong learning.
We believe a curriculum should be both broad and balanced. Students should experience a wide range of subjects, knowledge and opportunities regardless of ability, need or background. The time devoted to different subjects is carefully considered so that it meets students’ present and future needs, preparing them for employment, further education and active participation in society.
Students’ experiences at FUS extend beyond timetabled lessons. Through enrichment activities, clubs, societies, assemblies and wider opportunities, students are encouraged to explore their interests, develop new skills and broaden their understanding of the world around them. Our aim is that students achieve strong outcomes in the qualifications they take and progress to positive destinations, including further study, training or employment.
What we want our students to become
Through our curriculum we aim to develop young people who are:
- Successful learners who enjoy learning, make strong progress and achieve their potential.
- Confident individuals who lead safe, healthy and fulfilling lives.
- Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society and understand their rights and responsibilities.
- Independent thinkers who develop curiosity, critical thinking and the ability to question and present reasoned arguments.
- Creative and reflective learners who appreciate human achievement and celebrate success in many forms.
- Environmentally aware individuals who understand the world around them and value sustainability.
- Self-motivated and resilient learners who can make informed choices about their future pathways.
- Effective team members who work responsibly with others and show respect for diverse cultures, languages and perspectives.
- Active participants in society who engage with cultural, social, economic and political life.
Delivering the curriculum
The curriculum is delivered within a positive and supportive school culture that values the contribution of every student and member of staff. Senior leaders and Directors of Learning work closely with staff to ensure the curriculum remains high quality, inclusive and responsive to students’ needs.
Key principles of our curriculum include:
- Continuity and progression – We work closely with our feeder middle schools to ensure smooth progression in learning from Years 7–13.
- Accessibility for all – Teaching approaches and support are adapted so that every student can access learning successfully. The school makes reasonable adjustments where required to meet individual needs.
- Effective organisation of teaching groups – Grouping arrangements are designed to support learning while making best use of available resources.
- Student engagement and independence – Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning, supported through homework, independent study and positive relationships with staff.
- A range of qualifications and pathways – Students have access to appropriate qualifications between ages 13–19, all of which are valued as meaningful measures of achievement.
- Personal development opportunities – Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is supported through curriculum learning, assemblies, tutor programmes, clubs and enrichment activities.
- Careers education – An extensive careers programme helps students understand employment pathways and develop skills needed for the future.
Reviewing and improving the curriculum
Our curriculum is continually reviewed to ensure it meets the changing needs of students, society and the local employment landscape. Feedback from students, parents, staff and governors plays an important role in shaping future developments.
We evaluate the effectiveness of our curriculum through:
- Student progress and achievement, including outcomes at Key Stages 4 and 5.
- Annual examination analysis to identify strengths and areas for improvement.
- Student voice and surveys, which provide insight into classroom experience, behaviour, wellbeing and enrichment.
- Parental consultation through meetings, surveys and communication platforms such as MyChildAtSchool.
- Staff and governor review, ensuring strategic oversight and continuous improvement.
Our goal is to ensure that every student at FUS receives a rich, ambitious and inclusive education that prepares them for success in further study, employment and life.
