Statistics

Miss. R. Elliott

Head of Faculty
Maths

The Ferndown Upper School Mathematics Department is extremely proud to offer Statistics as an option to our Higher-tiered mathematicians. This option is an excellent choice if you enjoy mathematics and is incredibly helpful if you intend to study A Levels, particularly in Mathematics, Biology, Geography, Psychology, Sociology, and Business.

Statistics is currently offered as an option which students choose to study for their GCSE options. Currently, it is offered as 3 lessons a fortnight, with the other 3 lessons in the option block being devoted to extra Science lessons, helping you progress in Biology, Chemistry and Physics too.

Only students in Y1, Y2, X1 and X2 are eligible to select Statistics as an option, due to the overlap with the Higher-tier GCSE.

Careers Links

A GCSE in Statistics develops valuable skills that are highly sought after by employers, including data analysis, critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to interpret and evaluate information. In an increasingly data-driven world, Statistics helps students understand patterns, trends, and evidence, enabling them to make informed decisions and assess risk effectively.

Statistics provides an excellent foundation for a wide range of careers, including data science, market research, finance, business, economics, healthcare, government, and social research. Careers such as data analyst, statistician, actuary, market researcher, and financial analyst rely heavily on statistical methods. Statistics also plays a vital role in fields such as medicine, psychology, sports science, environmental science, and public health, where collecting, analysing, and interpreting data is essential.

The skills developed through GCSE Statistics complement other subjects and support further study in mathematics, science, economics, psychology, geography, and business. A strong understanding of statistics equips students with the tools to navigate and succeed in a world where data influences many aspects of everyday life and professional decision-making.
