Physics

Miss. A.
Baker

Head of Subject
Physics

“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.”

The Physics department is a wealth of experience, passion and enthusiasm. We aim to develop curious, confident and independent learners who understand how the physical world works and apply their knowledge to everyday life. We do this through lessons where students build on their scientific knowledge and practical skills, as well as extra-curricular activities and events. Students develop a large variety of skills that are highly sought after by employers, preparing them for their future careers.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities & Enrichment

Planetarium – Year 9 get to take a tour of the universe in the planetarium dome that visits the school hall!

Solve for tomorrow (Samsung) – at the end of year 9 students get to participate in the Samsung solve for tomorrow challenge, where they create a piece of technology to help with societal issues such as disabilities or loneliness.

Local industry visits and talks – we have lots of local links to industry such as Siemens and Hoare Lea. Siemens offer an open morning with the chance to tour round and participate in some activities. Hoare Lea have allowed us to visit them for an open morning, where we could experience VR and they also support us with Girls in Engineering talks.

GCSE Science Live – Students get the chance to see and hear from five of Britain’s top scientists, in the cutting edge of their fields, at a theatre in London. It shows students that science can offer solutions to many big problems.

Careers Links

As a Physics student, you will have gained skills highly valued by employers, such as critical thinking, numeracy and problem solving. Students who study physics can go on to careers in a wide variety of sections including, science and engineering, healthcare and technology, computing, data and finance as well as teaching and communication.

Useful Information for Parents

Students will sit two papers, both worth 100 marks, at the end of year 11. More information can be found on the AQA website below.

Homework is set fortnightly and involves some exam question practice in a homework booklet and a Sparx Science online learning homework. Students have access to multiple sources for revision, these include: Seneca, Cognito, Exampro as well as their class books. These can all be encouraged to use.

In year 9 we offer an opportunity to purchase revisions guides via the school, which is another source students are able to use to support their learning and independent study.
