Fine Art

Mrs. M.
Chengadu

Head of Subject
Fine Art

“Our Art students and teachers are engaged, and excited to be in our classrooms.”

Studying Fine Art at Ferndown Upper is an engaging and diverse space which allows our pupils to develop creative and analytical thinking. We encompass a broad range of materials, techniques, and conceptual development that allows our students to build confidence & understand the process of becoming a young independent artist. Lessons are engaging, diverse, and challenging – building on knowledge and skills each academic year. As the Head of Fine Art, I am keen for students to have access to a broad and varied curriculum, which through lesson planning, trips, and 1-1 feedback is personalised to our individual students.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities & Enrichment

We host regular visiting artists and workshops. In 2024, we hosted two visiting artists who provided practical workshops for our students. We have hosted GCSE trips to galleries, and Year 12 begin their final major project with a trip to the National Gallery in London which allows them to gain further insight through the gallery’s curation and related artworks to their chosen historical piece. 6th form are also offered bi-weekly enrichment sessions in Art, where a small group create a variety of different mini-projects using clay, card, weave & more!

Year 9 & GCSE Art club: runs every Wednesday 2.40-3.55pm

Useful Information for Parents

All subjects have class TEAMS pages which are updated weekly with learning resources and homework tasks.

Project planners, checklists and deadlines are provided in sketchbooks and online.

Fine Art students at FUS produce ambitious, highly personalised outcomes that reflect both technical confidence and individual voice. They respond thoughtfully to feedback, refining their skills while pushing beyond initial ideas to explore greater conceptual depth. We have a range of materials in the department to provide students the opportunities for degree level work: from the darkroom, to printmaking facilities including metal plate etching, as well as oil paints, glazes & building our own canvases.
