Head of Design and Technology

Head of Design Technology

Main Pay Scale/Upper Pay Scale plus TLR 2.2/3

Ferndown Upper School is a very special place to work because we have well-behaved students, who allow their teachers to teach, we focus on work-life balance to ensure that staff spend their time on the activities that actually make a difference and we have a friendly and supportive staff body.

Ferndown itself is also an ideal location; it is ten minutes from the historic market town of Wimborne, thirty minutes from the sandy beaches of Bournemouth and Poole and twenty-five minutes from the New Forest.

We are pleased to offer an opportunity for an inspirational Design Technology specialist, to make Technology a truly aspirational pathway for all students. Central to the position, for the candidate with the right experience and vision, is the aim of making the department an integral part of Ferndown Upper School’s STEAM ethos of excellence, where every student matters.

Product Design is the current subject under the Technology umbrella that we focus on from Yr9 onwards and we currently have two GCSE cohorts per year at KS4 and one smaller group for each year group at KS5. The successful candidate will also be responsible for future curriculum development, with a view to the possible expansion of Post-16 provision across Technology.

The successful candidate will manage a team of mixed discipline specialists, many of whom teach multiple subjects across the faculty and oversee the deployment of technician and TA support. As a key position within the Art & Technology faculty, being able to effectively communicate with and support colleagues across the team and the wider school, will form an essential part of the role.

What Ferndown Can Offer You:

  • Great students who behave impeccably – you can make a difference to their learning.
  • The opportunity to work with outstanding colleagues.
  • Tight, robust behaviour systems.
  • Highly visible and supportive senior leaders who have your back.
  • Centralised detentions, including homework detentions (you do not need to organise/run/chase), helping to underpin impeccable behaviour, so you are free to teach.
  • A feedback policy focused on whole class feedback – you do not need to mark exercise books – we do not have onerous or impossible marking policies.
  • No formal graded lesson observations – just ongoing ‘no-stakes’ feedback, helping you to continuously develop – we believe that trusting our staff with autonomy helps to develop a strong staff culture.
  • Centralised, shared units of work and resources.
  • Excellent ongoing CPD, career development and promotion opportunities.
  • Really well-kept site and a very pleasant location in beautiful Dorset.

Ferndown Upper School values the diversity of our workforce and welcome applications from all sections of the community.

The Art & Technology Faculty

Introduction:

The Technology department is situated in the same area of the school as the Art & Design facilities and like the whole block, benefitted from substantial remodelling of all the teaching areas a few years ago. Design Technology has two large workshop classrooms, machine room, laser cutter and department office and Food Technology has two large practical kitchens, with interconnected storage and washing-up areas. A large IT suite is conveniently situated between the two areas. Excellent teaching and learning is the primary aim of the faculty.  Experienced teachers work collaboratively to add to and improve existing schemes of work, always aiming to develop a curriculum appropriate to the needs of our students.
