PASTORAL MANAGER

Dorset Grade 8 Scale Point 12-20 – £13.69 to £15.70 per hour

Pay progression available with experience

37 hours per week

Term time only plus 5 staff training days

A non-teaching member of staff is needed to manage the attendance, behaviour, welfare and safeguarding for a year group. The successful candidate will work alongside and support our existing teaching Heads of Year, Heads of House, DSL and SLT link as we continue to support all students to achieve their best academic outcomes, whilst dealing with the many diverse issues that arise in a school. 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Recording and dealing with safeguarding concerns
  • Working with students with complex social and emotional needs
  • Responding to behaviour incidents, collecting statements and speaking to students, managing the report card system
  • Checking attendance for the year group is accurate on Bromcom and making referrals to the attendance service for students of concern
  • Responding to parental concerns within 24 hours
  • Being available for multiagency work
  • Organising drop in sessions for other agencies in school and making appointments for students in your year
  • Proactive support of student needs

You will be:

  • Experienced in working with a variety of external agencies
  • Experienced in dealing with child protection and child in need processes
  • Experienced in working as a pastoral/behaviour support manager/worker
  • Conversant with safeguarding procedures
  • Conversant with attendance procedures
  • Committed to raising standards of achievement
  • Able to work constructively as part of a team
  • Able to organise, lead and motivate others
  • Able to prioritise work and meet deadlines under pressure
  • Able to liaise with staff, students, parents and external agencies in a calm, sensitive and confident manner.

Ferndown Upper School will conduct online searches of shortlisted candidates. Job Specification: Pastoral Manager

Reports to: Deputy Headteacher

Main Job Purpose

A non-teaching full time role to provide professional pastoral care to support the welfare and progress of students at Ferndown Upper School, working as part of a team liaising with staff, parents and external agencies.

 Main Responsibilities and Duties

  1. To be committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of students, raising concerns as appropriate.
  • To lead pastoral support and work in partnership with Head of Year to support the welfare of all students in the year group.
  • To have professional, firm and caring relationship with students and parents.
  • To use data to monitor and intervene appropriately for attendance, behaviour and progress.
  • To build professional staff relationships and with external agencies.
  • First point of contact and liaison between families and other agencies e.g. Children’s Services and Child Health.  Deal with queries and problems in relation to students.
  • To be friendly, helpful and welcoming to parents and other visitors making contact with school.
  • Good role model to students.
  • To maintain an appropriate and professional distance with students in more informal situations.
  1. Implement behaviour policy and deal with student behaviour issues, including gathering of statements following an incident.
  1. Deal with correspondence in relation to student welfare and behaviour.  To file student information (electronically and paper). Record information on student welfare and attendance.
  1. Monitoring attendance and punctuality and ensuring appropriate coding.
  1. Attend regular meetings (as appropriate).
  1. To use appropriate intervention and support to support welfare and progress.
  1. To provide advice to students relating to their social, health, hygiene and emotional development needs.

Knowledge & Skills

Relevant previous office and supervisory experience is required and the appropriate qualification (minimum NVQ level 3 in Administration or minimum of 5 GCSE’s (A*-C grades) or equivalent vocational qualification. Relevant pastoral and safeguarding qualifications.

Supervision & Management

The postholder will often be required to work without direct supervision. Supervision will be present where necessary.

Problem Solving and Creativity

Deal with problems regarding workload, allocation of work of the year group. Guidance would be sought of the Head of Year.

Key Contacts & Relationships

Daily contact by telephone/face to face with Headteacher/Staff/Pupils/Parents and other visitors to the school.

Decision Making

To make appropriate decisions regarding students on a daily basis on a reactive and proactive basis.

Main job purpose
To provide efficient administrative support, to ensure compliance with LA and the School administrative and reporting requirements, including undertaking manual and computer data entry/extraction and other administrative duties.
Main responsibilities and duties

  1. To lead a team managing and directing the work of the Administrative/Clerical/Secretarial team, providing administrative and secretarial support to the school.
  2. To manage the provision of Administrative/Clerical/Secretarial to Heads of Year and other staff; to decide on priorities and direct and allocate work to team members.
  3. To be responsible for all aspects of the operation of SIMS/software (Schools Information Management System) for the storage, production of information, statistics and reports associated with detailed pupil records.
  4. To assist the Headteacher/Business Manager in the interpretation of results, to develop, modify and enhance reports content, format and design as required.
  5. To be responsible for maintaining the computerised school attendance registers and provide analysis and reports as required.
  6. To co-ordinate and control the Office IT systems, resolve associated problems in the first instance, and contribute to the development and implementation of new systems and procedures.
  7. To contribute to the appointment of own team support staff (e.g. place advertisements, send out application forms, take up references and participate in the selection of support staff).
  8. To undertake Performance Management Reviews in accordance with the policy practice of the school.
  9. Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people in accordance with the school’s safeguarding and child protection policy.

  2. Assist the Headteacher/Business Manager in the recruitment of own staff team members.
  3. Advise the Headteacher/Business Manager of own staff training and development needs.

    To deploy staff to meet specific work requirements and to cover staff absences.
