Letter to Parents 01.11.21

Dear Parents and Carers,

New T Level Building

I am delighted to inform you that we have been granted the capital funding for our new T Level building to host our new Digital T Levels. We are the first institution in the whole of Dorset and BCP to be allowed to deliver this new qualification and it will add to the two specialist computing rooms that Mr Osborne also sourced funding for. It will now make FUS the lead Digital Education & Computing hub for East Dorset and the first choice for those students who wish to gain professional accreditation and skills in the digital sector for progression on to university or straight into industry. Our new facilities will include a purpose-built software development lab, network engineering workshop and seminar suite. We will be offering up to three digital T level routes in Software Development, Networking Engineering and IT Systems Management. More details can be found at www.ferntech.org/t-levels and more information will be available at our Sixth Form Open Evening on the 10th of November and a T Level launch event later in the term.

We now need a site to locate this new block upon and we had been negotiating with the King George 5th Charity over a proposed land swap, where FUS gains the condemned Redgra land and the charity gains some of the playing fields near the First and Middle Schools. Unfortunately, the charity trustees, who are all Ferndown Town Councillors, did not agree to this exchange, but we are hopeful that they may do so in the future.

We have therefore decided to site the new block in our back car park, and this may now mean that we may have to reserve our front car park for school use only.

I will update you in later letters about how you can let your local councillor know if you would be in favour of this land swap, as the school is very keen to site further T Level blocks to deliver courses in Childcare and Engineering. FUS is also keen to source a 3g football pitch that would be available to our students but also to the local community after school hours, as Ferndown is the only area locally that does not have this provision. And while the charity has not been able to provide this, I am confident that the school would be able to. I am sure you will agree if you have seen the condemned Redgra, that it would be much better use of the land.

COVID & Flu Vaccinations

We have COVID and Flu vaccinations booked for this Thursday and Friday, the 4th and 5th November. The Flu vaccinations will definitely go ahead, and we hope the COVID ones will as well, but a lot of local schools have had their COVID vaccinations cancelled recently so we will keep you updated.

If this is the case, I can recommend that parents visit the following web site to book their child’s vaccination themselves: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination/book-coronavirus-vaccination/.

We have been told that we will only receive the COVID vaccination consent forms on Monday 1st, and we will give these out to the students straight away, but that does not leave a lot of time for them to be returned by the Thursday.

No child will receive their COVID vaccination without signed consent.

Wimborne Road East Entrance / Exit

With this entrance / exit now closed, we have noticed that the students are now using the pedestrian crossing, rather than crossing the road unsafely, so we will continue to keep it shut while there is no crossing lady on duty.

Duke of Edinburgh Launch Evening Mr Martin and Mrs Pemberton (the Duke of Edinburgh Coordinators) would like to invite you to a parents’ evening to discuss the Bronze Award in more detail on Monday 8th November 2021, at 6pm in the school hall. This meeting is predominantly aimed at students in Year 10, but also those in Year 11 who would love to do the award and think they can balance their award commitments with their GCSE ones.
