Letter to Parents 10th July 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,                                                                                                         10th July 2020

I just wanted to write to you all to give you a quick information update for each year group, including our new Year 9’s. We will stop delivering lessons at 12.10 on Friday 17th July, however, there will be optional enrichment activities for the students to engage with over the summer on our website.

Ferndown Upper will re-open fully on Monday 7th September for Year 9 and Year 12 and then Tuesday 8th September for the remaining year groups. It will also be a return to full time education and I will write to you next week with our plan of exactly how this will work.

Year 11

It was lovely to see Y11 in school today for their final assembly, we realise that lockdown has been particularly hard for them, but they have been brilliant. Please do speak to your son or daughter about the social distancing. I also reminded them that it would be great to see them all again on results day on the 20th August and also for Prom at Christmas time. Prom is open to all students, whether they have returned to us for 6th form or not and we will also give out subject awards and exam certificates at this event.

Year 13

Results day is the 13th August and we are looking forward to seeing Y13 again. There will also be a Y13 graduation at Christmas time, more information is to follow.

GCSE & A-Level Dates

For those students who wish to have an opportunity to sit their exams:

• GCE AS and A-Level examinations start on Monday 5th October and finish on Friday 23rd October.

• GCSE examinations start on Monday 2nd November and finish on Monday 23rd November.

The deadlines for entry are:

• (GCE AS & A-level) – 4th September

• GCSE (except English Language and Mathematics) – 18th September

• GCSE (English Language and Mathematics) – 4th October.

Year 9

There is only one week to go and we think they have been amazing, continuing to access our five lessons a day, without having been into school at all during this time. May I take this opportunity to wish them all a very relaxing summer holiday.

Year 10 and Year 12

I hope they have enjoyed having face to face lessons again, we have certainly enjoyed having them back into school.

New Year 9

We are really looking forward to seeing you all next week for our meet the tutor event, remember all of the key information is on our website https://fernup.dorset.sch.uk/information/transfer/ and you will also find our new transfer evening videos there as well.

We are sorry that we had to change from vertical tutor groups to Year 9 tutor groups, but this does mean that there is now a much higher chance of being in the same tutor group as a friend. The approach we have taken to lessons next year is to try to make the experience as close to normal as possible, while still making the required adjustments for social distancing. Currently each student will be in a group for tutor time, in a teaching group for the majority of their subjects, in a gender specific group for PE and then they will be in a set for science and maths lessons. This is what we think is the most suitable approach at the present time with the present guidance, however, if the situation changes over the summer we will inform you of any changes as quickly as possible.
