Ferndown Upper School came out victorious in a very close, competitive, physical game against St Peter’s School the U16 Dorset County Cup Final. Both teams had excellent scores against other schools to get through to the final held at Chapel gate.
In the first fifteen minutes Ferndown pushed hard against a determined St Peters mid field and solid defence. A break away counter attack however from St Peter’s mid field ended in a spectacular goal scored by Jamie Wilkinson(1-0). This took the wind out of Ferndown’s sails for the rest of the half as St Peter’s continually attacked the Ferndown half.
The second half started with Ferndown using the wind advantage to play long balls deep into St Peter’s half. A few minutes in; Ferndown’s Sam Surridge linked up with the long pass and equalised St Peters lead. Ferndown continued to challenge the mid field and play wide creating gaps in the defence, which lead to a quick second goal by Ferndown’s Charlie Kendall (2-1). St Peter’s rallied round and put Ferndown’s mid field and defence under pressure once more. Putting Ferndown on the back foot St Peter’s created an chance for Lewis Maguire to place a well – placed shot resulting a tie once more (2-2).
Late into the second half Ferndown’s Matt Neale swerved his way around several defenders and crossed the ball for Sam Surridge to volley home the winning goal.
Special mention to St Peters centre backs Harry Grant, Daniel Lombard Bishop. and Ferndown’s Charlie Kendall, Kieron Francis, Kieran Francis, Matt Neale, Sam Daver and Sam Surridge for outstanding play during the match.
This is the second year in a row that the players from Ferndown have lifted the County title.
