Headteacher’s Newsletter 20.3.17
Congratulations to our Year 11 Basketball team who played QE recently in a very close fought game. FUS were trailing QE for the first 2 quarters but by the end of the 3rd quarter both teams were tied. By the end of the match, FUS came out eventual 43-42 winners, so well done to everyone who was involved.
Amy Winehouse Presentation
On Wednesday, between 3 and 4.30pm there is an open invitation to parents to attend the staff presentation from the Amy Winehouse foundation. The foundation works to prevent the effects of drug and alcohol misuse on young people. If you would like to attend then please can you email Mrs Stroud, who has organised the whole initiative, at SarahStroud@fernup.dorset.sch.uk.
STEM – Engineering
Our Engineering team carried out a presentation last week to senior members of the RNLI over their new product proposals. As a result of this, their designed jacket, which is now in its second prototype phase, is currently winging its way to Bangladesh for testing before possible production, which is an outstanding outcome for all of their efforts, well done.
STEM – Planetarium
As part of Science week, we not only held National Demo Day last Thursday in lessons but we also set up a Planetarium in the school hall, so that our students could visit as part of their lessons. All of the feedback has been positive and continues the school’s drive to embed STEM within our curriculum.
All of these STEM initiatives have been led by our new Head of Physics, Mrs Bothamley, who has made an excellent start to her time here at FUS.
We have a gifted tutor at the moment visiting us to work with one of our students upon their guitar playing, so if there are any other students interested in possible lessons then please do approach Mrs Dymond.
Ellen Macarthur Cancer Trust Volunteer Success
Amelia Caley has been successfully accepted as a volunteer for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. She had to go through a two day selection process in Birmingham and was one of the 16 selected from 250 people, so well done Amelia. She will now be giving up her spare time to support children who have been diagnosed with cancer, helping to rebuild their confidence through sailing. She will be doing this alongside her three A Levels.
Year 11 Theatre Revision Day
Thank you to Mrs Senington for an engaging and innovative twist on revision last Monday. A visiting theatre company put our Year 11 students through their paces, learning key GCSE scripts.
Jon Egging Visit
And thank you to Mrs Lloyd-Smith for another high quality Jon Egging enhancement day last Thursday.
Y12 French Teacher
The school has been successful in recruiting an Y12 French teacher for next September so A Level French will now run as a course.
And finally a quick reminder that we are holding a Comic Relief Mufti Day this Friday, with the theme being wearing red.
