City and Guilds specialises in developing Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQs) these are designed to develop practical skills and provide a pathway for the student’s chosen career development.  Students successfully completing the course will achieve the City and Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Hospitality (Multi-Skilled) which is equivalent to a GCSE at Grade A* – C.

Additional Certification

In addition to the City and Guilds Certificate Students can achieve the following additional qualifications:  Welcome Host Certificate and Food Hygiene and Safety Certificate (Level 2).

Reasons for studying this course

This subject is suitable for students working towards a career in the Hospitality and Leisure Industry.  Students wishing to pursue a career in Hotel Management, Catering, Reception, Travel, Customer Care, Leisure, or any career that involves providing for others will find this course an interesting pathway.

What you will be studying

Students will study four mandatory units set by the exam board and additional units selected by the course tutor.  The additional units are designed to encompass an interesting and practical approach with specific knowledge tailored to enhance student’s progression to further study in their chosen area.

The mandatory units are:

  • Safe, hygienic and secure working
  • Effective Teamwork

Additional units offered are:

  • Giving customers a positive impression
  • Food safety in catering
  • Prepare, cook and finish food
  • Reception communication procedures
How you will learn

This course is taught in partnership with four other Dorset Schools, Additionally, each school is linked to a local hotel.  Throughout year 10, students will undertake numerous external activities in conjunction with the other partnership schools and their link hotel. The course requires a good deal of commitment from students in terms of time, attendance and interest.

Local hotels via the Bournemouth Area Hospitality Association sponsor and support the course along with numerous local restaurants and related businesses.

How you will be assessed

Students are continually assessed throughout the course.  All work completed will form part of a portfolio of evidence showing that students have met the requirements for each unit of study. In addition to this students will sit a sixty-minute externally set short answer examination.

Selection of Students and Progression

This course is part of a partnership with other schools and therefore limited places are available.  Students will undergo a short interview as part of their induction to ensure it is the most appropriate pathway for them. Completion of this course will form a pathway for students to progress to Level Three certificates at school/college or provide direct entry to employment at trainee or apprenticeship level.
